Keenesburg, Colorado is a small town located in Weld County. The town was founded in 1871 by William Keene, who named the town after himself. Keene established a farm and a stagecoach stop, which served as a rest stop for travelers heading west on the Overland Trail. The town grew slowly over the next several decades, and by the early 20th century, it had a population of around 200 people.

In the early 1900s, the town experienced a population boom due to the discovery of coal deposits in the area. The mining industry brought jobs and prosperity to the town, but it also led to environmental degradation and health problems for the residents.

After the Great Depression and the decline of coal mining, the population of Keenesburg started to decrease and reached about 600 people by 1940.

Today, Keenesburg is a small, quiet community with a population of around 2,000 people. The main industries are agriculture and manufacturing. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside and open spaces, which attract outdoor enthusiasts and visitors who come to explore the natural beauty of the area. Keenesburg is also known for its wildlife sanctuary which is home to big cats and other exotic animals, and the town holds an annual “Wild Animal Sanctuary Day” festival.
